About Subaru Impreza STI

Subaru Impreza STI (Subaru Tecnica International) is a compact vehicle manufactured by Japanese automaker Subaru division of Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) since 1994. Just like Subaru Impreza WRX, the first Subaru Impreza STI was also introduced in 2004 as the performance-oriented version of Subaru Impreza. Before it was replaced by the Subaru WRX STI since 2015, Subaru Impreza STI has been produced through three generations.
The third generation high performance Subaru Impreza STI (2007-2011) was unveiled on October 2007. It actually can be seen as a superior version of Subaru Impreza WRX. There were Subaru Impreza STI Takumi, 20th Anniversary Edition Subaru Impreza STI, and Subaru Impreza STI Spec C, Subaru Impreza STI A-Line, and Subaru Impreza STI 330S and so on trim levels available. North American version Subaru Impreza STI was powered by a 2.5 L EJ257 engine with single-scroll VF48 turbocharger. Then the fourth generation Subaru Impreza STI (2014) was released in 2014, it is the last year of the Subaru Impreza STI. It retained the same engine as the previous generation Subaru Impreza STI. And trim levels were Limited, Premium, Base and so on. In 2015, the Subaru released the Subaru WRX STI to replace the Subaru Impreza STI in North America.

Subaru Impreza STI Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Though Subaru Impreza STI is equipped with more advanced auto parts than Subaru Impreza WRX as it is a superior version of Subaru Impreza WRX, it is still inevitable that auto parts in Subaru Impreza STI would wear and tear. So some common problems would happen to it as well:
First, engine failure. Though it is very natural that engine would start to wear as running, what you should focus on is if it wears prematurely. Some Subaru Impreza STI owners have met engine failure as loss of power while accelerating or even an ability to start the vehicle. And if your Subaru Impreza STI's engine is making metallic or whining sound while operating, it consumes more fuel or simply the Check Engine Light comes on, you might as well inspect if the STI oil filter or the STI timing cover is failing.
Second, suspension failure. According to Subaru Impreza STI drivers, suspension failure in the vehicle is also a very troublesome problem for them as it influences the driving experience severely. Specific symptoms include vehicle bottoming out, excessive road noises from the front or rear end, damage to front tires, brakes and front suspension parts and grinding or roaring noises. If your Subaru Impreza STI's steering wheel also becomes vibrating, you really should have a thorough inspection on the wheel bearing and coil spring insulator.
It is certain that more auto parts in Subaru Impreza STI also need your excellent maintenance. Brake light switch, for example, as an electrical part that is exposed to repeated usage times; it is easy to go wrong. So once the brake lights stay on when they should not or do not turn on at all, your Subaru Impreza STI needs a new brake light switch. Other parts such as wiper blade, headlight, fog light or even antenna, they all work under open and harsh environment, so you should add them on your routine maintenance list as well.
