The Subaru Forester A/C Compressor blows cold air into the passenger compartment by pushing refrigerant through a high pressure loop which changes its phase, gas to liquid and back. The unit sucks in low-pressure vapor, squeezes it into a hot, high-pressure stream, and pushes that vapor to the condenser, where heat exits. Meanwhile, the cooled liquid enters the evaporator and shoots out crisp air through the vents. Thus, this cycle repeats continuously. Early Forester generations utilized fixed displacement designs that operated continuously whenever the belt turned. A more efficient use of variable displacement A/C Compressor setups, which modulate output according to cabin demand, trims engine load and cuts fuel consumption without removing comfort. Though both designs utilize the same sequence of processes, which are compress, condense, expand, and evaporate, types are recognized as steady state due to the way they operate to deliver their cooling effect. Variable designs offer smoother temperature control and quieter operation. Prior to replacing a worn A/C Compressor, owners should check if their system has R12 or the cleaner R134a since each needs its specific lubricant. - Q:How to Remove and Replace an A/C Compressor on Subaru Forester?Posted by Kestutis M.A:Have a technician discharge and recover the refrigerant. Disconnect the battery, remove the A/C compressor drivebelt, and the electrical harness from the alternator for older models, or the alternator for newer models. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor and plug the fittings. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch electrical connector, remove the compressor mounting bolts and the compressor. If installing a new compressor, drain excess oil and possibly transfer the clutch from the old unit. Reinstall in reverse order, using new O-rings coated with refrigerant oil. Tighten bolts and fittings to torque. Use A/C-specific O-rings.
