The Subaru Forester Canister Purge Valve helps prevent fuel vapors from being emitted, allowing them to be applied as fuel. The Canister Purge Valve is situated between the intake manifold and the charcoal canister. It opens when the engine control computer sends a command, allowing hydrocarbons to come into contact with air so they can burn rather than pollute. Earlier models applied a basic vacuum-operated Canister Purge Valve. This opened whenever manifold vacuum rose while cruising. The later generations had a more sophisticated electronically controlled Canister Purge Valve. Here, the ECM cycles the valve on and off to fine-tune vapor flow and run self-tests for leaks.
