The start-up of the Subaru Impreza relies heavily on its Starter Motor, which converts battery current into mechanical rotation that cranks the engine. A strong solenoid that receives power from the ignition switch and its relay throws the drive pinion into the flywheel and powers the Starter Motor windings simultaneously with the main power through a heavy cable. Within the mechanism, a rapidly rotating armature along with field coils or permanent magnets as well as brushes and a commutator coordinate to make the shaft rotate. After this, combustion takes over. The direct drive arrangement was applied by the Subaru Impreza for many years in the traditional trims. The later trims, however, offered a gear-reduction Starter Motor. The starter activates with small high-speed gears for low weight and high torque. The only difference is an interposed reduction gear set. The two have an overrunning clutch that mechanically disconnects the drive the instant the engine fires to prevent damage. The car's Starter Motor starts working only when it's out of gear with the help of additional safety circuits, including neutral or clutch switches. Across generations, Subaru improved the materials and packaging to keep the Impreza quick to start. This compact yet durable Starter Motor is a result of that effort.

- Q:How to Remove the Starter Motor on a Subaru Impreza?Posted by Brandon G.A:To replace the starter motor, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. On turbo models remove the intercooler. On non-turbo models remove the air filter housing, and remove the air filter housing support bracket. Disconnect the wire and the large cable from the terminals on the starter solenoid, remove the upper starter motor mounting bolt, remove the lower starter motor mounting bolt, and detach the starter from the engine.
