How to Remove and Install the Trunk Lid Lift Support on a Subaru Outback?

The liftgate is ponderous and a little unwieldy-it should be handled by no less than two people. Open the back door properly and hold it tightly. The support strut can be taken off from the vehicle by removing the retaining bolts at either end of the strut. Take out the bolt(s) holding the upper part of the liftgate strut, then unhook its lower part away from the body. It should not be attempted to pry off these struts' spherical bearings; they cannot be removed as such. Put back everything in place after you are through with removal.
