Firmly apply the parking brake and try to momentarily operate the starter in each shift lever position; the starter should only operate when the shift lever is in the PARK or NEUTRAL positions. To replace the shift cable, disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, make sure the shift lever is in the NEUTRAL position, raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands, remove the engine splash shield, exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe and muffler, heat shield, locking clip from the shift lever on the transaxle, shift cable end, and shift cable from the shift cable mount bracket. To adjust the cable, make sure the shift lever is in the NEUTRAL position, raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands, remove the engine splash shield, center exhaust pipe and muffler, heat shield, loosen Adjusting nut A and Adjusting nut B on both sides of the cable end, turn Adjusting nut B until it contacts the linkage arm, install a back-up wrench onto Adjusting nut B to keep it from rotating and tighten Adjusting nut A to the torque, remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle, move the shift lever through all gear positions and verify that the indicated positions correspond with the actual gear positions at the shift lever console, and verify that the engine will start only in PARK and NEUTRAL, and that the back-up lights come on when the shift lever is placed in REVERSE.
