Subaru 20380SA020 Rear Coil Spring

Only Forester models are equipped with rear strut/coil spring assemblies, while all other models have shock/coil spring assemblies. The manufacturer recommends using new self-locking mounting nuts when installing the strut assembly. Begin by removing the trim piece covering the strut upper mounting nuts. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, block the front wheels, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the rear wheels. For 2002 and earlier Forester models with rear disc brakes, remove the brake hose banjo bolt from the caliper and detach the hose from the bracket on the strut. For those with rear drum brakes, unscrew the metal brake line from the flexible brake hose at the bracket on the strut, remove the U-clip, and detach the hose and line from the bracket. Place a floor jack under the rear knuckle and raise it until it just contacts the knuckle. Remove the strut-to-knuckle nuts and bolts; if the bolts are difficult to remove, raise the jack slightly until they come out easily. Have an assistant support the strut, then remove the strut upper mounting nuts. Installation is the reverse of removal, using the jack to align the holes in the strut bracket with those in the knuckle, ensuring all fasteners are tightened to the specified torque. For 2002 and earlier Forester models, bleed the brakes if necessary. If disassembly of the strut/coil spring assembly is required to replace either the strut or the coil spring, follow the appropriate instructions. Finally, install the wheels and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the wheel lug nuts to the specified torque.

It is important to mark the bolt position because there is an indexing mark on the strut flange, and the proper alignment mark on the bolt must line up with it when installed to preserve the camber setting.
