    Q:
What are the troubleshooting steps for electric car mirrors that are not functioning properly on a Subaru Impreza? Posted by Customer
    A:
The majority of electric rearview mirrors comprise two moving motors which are for mirror glass displacement up and down, and to the left or right. The control switch comprises a selector part that feeds electricity either into the left or right hand side mirror. Roll down all windows with ignition ON but engine OFF, and operate the mirror control switch through all its functions (left-right and up-down) for both left and right side mirrors. Always listen carefully for any sound from the electric motors running in your mirrors. If you can hear the motors running but there is no movement of the mirror glass, then there may be something wrong with the drive mechanism inside it. In case there is no action by these mirrors and also no sound emerges from them, check on a fuse. If the fuse is good, remove just the mirror control switch from its mounting without disconnecting wires attached to it. Turn ON ignition again and check at this switch for voltage as well; one terminal should show voltage presence while others not at all. For example if this switch does not have any voltage indicated on it check for an open or short circuit in between the panel of fuses to this switch. Disconnect this wire in case there is voltage at that particular place where it connects to this switch; otherwise leave it connected still, connect another jumper wire between it as well as ground leaving other wire unchanged completely if my suggestion becomes true then fix loose grounding connection otherwise go ahead remove this mirror checking those wires in that car whether they have any voltages over them with ignition ON and selector switch on a correct side; after putting this selector in each position push button around lever's base so that it may release normally against one or both stoppers (off position has zero voltaic potential drop). All switches including each single one must indicate some voltage present at least once via respective electrical conductor joining these switches together with mirrors positioned opposite or facing them apart basically whenever changeover occurs during operation of any such switch (except neutral "off" position). Where there is no voltage at all in each such switch position, simply verify whether this circuit between this mirror and control switch is open or shorted. In case there is voltage remove and test it off the vehicle with jumper wires. Shall it fail this test, replace it immediately.
