    Q:
What are the functions, components, and troubleshooting steps for the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Speed Sensor on Subaru Forester? Posted by Customer
    A:
ABS and VDC systems have been developed to enable the vehicle to be steered, stabilized directionally and decelerated at an optimum level when experiencing heavy braking or violent manoeuvring on road surfaces. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) system is designed in such a way that it prevents wheel lockup during heavy brake application by monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel and controlling brake line pressure. ABS wheel speed sensors supply data to VDC system which are used for traction control, over/under-steering as well as acceleration control. An Electronic Control Unit (ECU), four-wheel speed sensors, and a hydraulic unit make up the ABS system whereas an ECU, yaw rate sensor, lateral sensor and steering angle sensor are what form part of the VDC system. When there is a problem with the ABS/VDC system, a warning light will illuminate on the dashboard. Some things to check may include inspecting brake fluid levels, testing electrical connections for firmness, examining hydraulic control unit among others; these checks should also include looking into fuses as well as investigating all wiring connections to see if they are secure and free from damage. If this does not work then you will need to find a competent mechanic or technician who can diagnose and fix your car. To remove a wheel speed sensor first loosen its lug nuts before raising the vehicle onto jackstands turning off ignition key tracing down & disconnecting its wires removing mounting bolt pulling out carefully placing back mount bolt tightening up putting back tire & ensuring securing lugs nuts tightly installed in order.

    Q:
Where is the Speed Sensor located on manual and automatic transaxles on a Subaru Forester? Posted by Customer
    A:
The right side of the transaxle is where you will find a VSS in manual transaxles. On automatic ones, there are two speed sensors on the left side of the transaxle; however, you have to drain the transmission fluid, remove the oil pan and remove the valve body to disconnect electrical connectors so we don't suggest doing this at your home. Qualified service technician should only replace speed sensor in an automatic transaxle. Follow this by disconnecting cable from battery's negative terminal. Also firmly place jackstands beneath vehicle then raise it. Disconnect electrical connector from VVS or unscrew VSS from transaxle. Unscrew simply to remove it from transaxle. Installation is reverse for removal.

    Q:
How to Remove and Install a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) on a Transaxle on Subaru Impreza? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the battery's negative terminal, raise the vehicle, and disconnect the VSS electrical connector. Remove the VSS, air filter housing or air intake duct, intercooler, and upper engine mount. Disconnect the transaxle harness, drain the fluid, and remove the exhaust system. Remove the heat shield, driveshaft, and crossmember. Disconnect fluid lines, remove front VSS and torque converter turbine speed sensor. Remove the transaxle fluid pan and disconnect the rear VSS electrical connector. Follow the VSS wiring harness into the transaxle and disconnect the connectors. Remove the ground wire and push the harness through the case. Disconnect the rear VSS connector and remove the sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Ensure the harness grommet seats properly, clean the mating surfaces, apply RTV sealant to the pan flange, and tighten all bolts.
