ABS and VDC systems have been developed to enable the vehicle to be steered, stabilized directionally and decelerated at an optimum level when experiencing heavy braking or violent manoeuvring on road surfaces. The Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) system is designed in such a way that it prevents wheel lockup during heavy brake application by monitoring the rotational speed of each wheel and controlling brake line pressure. ABS wheel speed sensors supply data to VDC system which are used for traction control, over/under-steering as well as acceleration control. An Electronic Control Unit (ECU), four-wheel speed sensors, and a hydraulic unit make up the ABS system whereas an ECU, yaw rate sensor, lateral sensor and steering angle sensor are what form part of the VDC system. When there is a problem with the ABS/VDC system, a warning light will illuminate on the dashboard. Some things to check may include inspecting brake fluid levels, testing electrical connections for firmness, examining hydraulic control unit among others; these checks should also include looking into fuses as well as investigating all wiring connections to see if they are secure and free from damage.
