Brakes should be inspected every time the wheels are removed or when a defect is suspected.

The process for inspecting brakes involves loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle on jackstands, and removing the wheels. For disc brakes, the inspection includes checking pad thickness, measuring disc thickness, and examining the condition of the discs for scoring, gouging, or burned spots. Brake lines and hoses are inspected for damage, wear, leaks, and other issues. For drum brakes, the parking brake must be off, and the brake drums are removed for cleaning and inspection. The thickness of lining material on brake shoes is measured and compared to specifications. All brake assembly springs are checked, and components are inspected for signs of fluid leakage. The brake drum's interior is cleaned and checked for imperfections, and the procedure is repeated for the remaining wheel.
