Subaru Forester Clutch Fork

The Subaru Forester Clutch Fork converts the pressure applied on the pedal into the delivery of motion that pushes the release bearing against the pressure plate so the driver can shift gears without grinding. Many modern Subaru cars use a Clutch Fork inside a hydraulic linkage. Fluid pressure from the master cylinder shoves a slave cylinder rod against the fork. This pivots the fork and disengages the clutch. This approach self-adjusts and works well in the compact engine bay of the Forester. Earlier editions of the Forester came with a simple cable arrangement. The cable pulls directly on the Clutch Fork. While this arrangement is easy to understand, it needs manual adjustment as the cable stretches over time. No matter what sort of linkage you have, the Clutch Fork pivots around a fixed point, drives the release bearing, and is loaded all the time. So cracks or wear will cause hard shifts or a complete loss of drive. Hydraulic systems may even eliminate the fork by using a concentric slave cylinder. But conventional models retain the robust design, and ensuring the Clutch Fork is free of damage is vital for smooth travel in any Subaru.

Subaru Forester Clutch Fork Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to Access and Inspect the Clutch Disc,Clutch Fork,Pressure Plate and Release Bearing on Subaru Forester?
    Posted by Spencer B.
    A:
To access the clutch, remove the transaxle, leaving the engine in the vehicle. Check the flywheel and pressure plate for marks, and loosen the bolts. Inspect the clutch disc lining, flywheel, machined surfaces, diaphragm spring fingers, and the Pilot Bearing for wear and damage. Clean the flywheel and pressure plate with brake cleaner, position the clutch disc and pressure plate against the flywheel, center the disc, and tighten the bolts. Lubricate the release bearing, install it, and reinstall the transaxle and other components.
