What is the purpose of checking the wheel bearings on Subaru Forester?

These models come with sealed bearings in the front and rear hub assemblies. In most cases, the wheel bearings will not need any service. However, it is advisable to check the bearings whenever the vehicle is lifted for any reason. Each wheel has to be spun to test for noise, rolling resistance and freeplay while the vehicle is securely supported on jackstands. One hand should grasp each tire top while the other grasps its bottom moving the wheel in and out on spindle. If any noticeable play is found, remove front wheel and check freeplay by a dial indicator. Just replace bearing assembly if there are excessive freeplay and bearing noises.
