It is a steel wire strand whose other end is connected to a lever on the throttle body or carburetor. Pulling this strand will pull the throttle plate open, while relaxing the tension will close the plate. Each Accelerator Cable has a lubricated core that slides inside an outer sleeve to reduce friction and create a smooth response. Early examples made do with a simple Accelerator Cable running to a carbureted intake system in which opening the plate allows extra airflow. This extra air ramps up the venturi effect that jets more fuel from the float bowl in for a richer mix. Trace the cable to the firewall, removing any clips or guides, and disconnect it from the accelerator pedal under the dash. Remove the grommet in the firewall and take out the cable. To install, reverse the process, ensuring correct cable routing and applying sealant if needed. Adjust the cable to ensure the throttle plate fully closes when the pedal is released and opens fully when depressed.
