Subaru Outback Cooling Fan Assembly

The Cooling Fan Assembly of a Subaru Outback draws air through the radiator to overcome the insufficient cooling air flow when the vehicle is not in motion. The Cooling Fan Assembly is situated just behind the grille close to the radiator. It comprises a fan blade powered by a motor mounted in a mounting shroud to a permanent fan shroud. Air entering flows directly across a core filled with coolant. With slow or stopped movement of a Subaru Outback, there is little ram air. The Cooling Fan Assembly turns on to direct fresh air through the fins, carrying heat away from coolant so that operating temperatures remain within their normal range. A fan on a modern vehicle is spun using an electric motor rather than the engine because the vehicle needs airflow. The Cooling Fan Assembly decreases the likelihood of overheating and promotes steady engine functioning by enhancing the heat transfer from the radiator to the ambient air. All Subaru Outbacks will rely on the coordinated functions of the blade, shroud, and motor unit. The Cooling Fan Assembly is active whenever road speed alone cannot provide enough air for cooling in the Subaru Outback.

Subaru Outback Cooling Fan Assembly Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to Replace the Cooling Fan Assembly on Subaru Outback?
    Posted by Simon T.
    A:
Lift the vehicle onto jack stands, and remove the engine splash shield, air intake duct, and Coolant Reservoir. Disconnect the fan motor connectors and remove the shroud from the radiator. Remove the fan motor mounting bolts, harness clips, and the fan motor. If replacing the fan motor, attach the fan to the new motor.
