Subaru Outback Diverter Valve

Using a simple but clever design, the Subaru Outback Diverter Valve controls airflow to minimize harmful emissions and protect components. In Outback models, this Diverter Valve works with the secondary air injection system. The valve delivers pressurized air from the pump. During engine warm-up, air is sent toward the exhaust ports to ensure unburned fuel oxidizes quickly. This helps warm the catalytic converter and trim hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide output. When the normal temperature is achieved, a vacuum signal re-directs the air stream to the catalytic converter in order to keep the oxygen sensor readings honest. In the event of sudden deceleration, the Diverter Valve immediately vents air to atmosphere in order to eliminate loud backfiring from the engine and to protect exhaust parts. In addition, the surrounding check valves prevent the backflow of gases. Created especially for turbocharged Subaru Outback versions, a different kind of Diverter Valve, also vacuum controlled, recirculates excess boost back into the intake. In this way, the turbo stays spinning, but without any pressure spikes or reverse flow; a better solution than a blow off unit that dumps air outside. The Diverter Valve, as proven by scientific studies, creates vacuum signals which allow the valve to switch. There are two variations of the Diverter Valve. One focuses on exhaust emissions and the other on boost management. However, either option will give Subaru owners smooth power delivery, safe hardware and cleaner air.

    How to Remove the Diverter Valve on a Subaru Outback?

    To remove the air bypass valve on 2007 and earlier models, first remove the engine cover (if equipped), then disconnect the vacuum hose from the air bypass valve, remove the air bypass valve mounting bolts, and lift the valve up and disconnect the turbocharger inlet duct from the valve. For 2008 and later models, disconnect the vacuum hose and air bypass hose from the air bypass valve, remove the air bypass valve mounting bolts, and then remove the air bypass valve. Installation is the reverse of removal.
