Subaru Outback Exhaust Manifold

The Subaru Outback Exhaust Manifold collects the hot exhaust gases coming from each cylinder head port and combines them into a single outlet that feeds to the pipe towards the catalytic converter, muffler, and tail pipe. In order to prevent leakage through the joint, the Subaru Outback Exhaust Manifold is fastened to the cylinder head and exhaust pipe with the help of gaskets on the joint. Many units are cast iron, while some use welded steel or stainless steel tubing. Many wear some type of heat shield protection. This keeps the heat from harming nearby parts or reducing the amount of heat transferred to the cabin's floor. This Exhaust Manifold may come with an oxygen sensor port or even an integrated catalytic converter, placing key emission components close to the engine for quicker operation. Although generally durable, constant thermal cycling can cause cracking. In case of damage, you should replace the Exhaust Manifold sooner rather than later. Otherwise, you will lose power and allow exhaust gas to intrude. A properly sealed Exhaust Manifold allows the engine to breathe easily and protects the occupants of the car, allowing the Subaru Outback to be more efficient and reliable during every daily drive.

Subaru Outback Exhaust Manifold Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove the exhaust manifold on Subaru Outback?
    Posted by Curt M.
    A:
Start by disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal of the battery in order to remove the exhaust manifold. Next, jack up the vehicle and make sure it is securely supported on jackstands. Take off engine splash shields and separate front as well as rear oxygen sensor connectors. Remove heat shields from non-turbocharged models' exhaust pipes and manifold, then remove both cylinder head nuts from exhaust manifold and bolts from exhaust manifold joint on straight six side. On turbocharged models, take off heat shields, then separate right side joint pipe fasteners between turbocharger and manifolds, as well as nuts that attach both cylinder heads to exhaust manifolds. Lastly get rid of the exhaust manifold itself. To install new ones, clean the mating surfaces of each cylinder head, manifold or manifolds and exhaust pipe(s), making sure they are flat without any damages. Put new gaskets on; put a manifold onto cylinder heads; and then tighten down bolts evenly. Afterward attach center pipe or turbocharger joint pipe to this manifold while tightening up all nuts equally connected thereunder. Finally reinstall everything following reverse steps involved in taking it apart but remember to reconnect battery first before testing for proper ventilation once again when turning engine on.
