How to Remove and Install a Drive Shaft on a Subaru Outback?

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove the heat shield cover, exhaust pipes, and driveshaft cover if needed. Mark the rear U-joint yoke and differential pinion flange, remove the bolts and nuts, and the center bearing retaining bolts. Remove the driveshaft and plug the extension housing. Lubricate the sleeve yoke splines, remove the housing plug and insert the sleeve yoke. Raise the center bearing, install and tighten the retaining bolts. Align the marked yoke and flange, connect with nuts and bolts, and tighten. Reverse the process to finish installation.

Subaru Outback Drive Shaft is designed to transfer engine torque from the transmission to the axles, allowing all four wheels to receive power and propel the vehicle. The hollow tube is fitted with yokes on each end, which are flexible joints that allow the Drive Shaft to pivot as the suspension works. Universal joints, often referred to as U-joints, manage normal operating angles, but some applications may instead employ a double Cardan arrangement for smoother motion. More extreme angles can call for a Rzeppa-type constant velocity joint. In case the length of the vehicle or packaging requires it, some configurations utilize a two-piece Drive Shaft attached with a center support bearing.
