How to Remove a Power Steering Pump on Subaru Outback?

Unplug the battery's negative terminal and remove the power steering fluid. Remove the drive belt pulley cover, drive belt, and on turbo models, the air intake duct. Disconnect the power steering pump connector and fluid lines. Remove the pump bracket bolts and the pump. In a vise, remove the pump-to-bracket bolts and pry the pump from the bracket. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten all fasteners and add new fluid. Check for leaks and bleed the system.

The Power Steering Pump of a Subaru Outback supplies hydraulic pressure to help the driver steer the vehicle. The pump is driven by engine power via a belt that draws fluid from a reservoir and pushes it through a high-pressure hose to the steering control valve. A Subaru steering system consists of a Power Steering Pump, hoses, control valve, piston, and cylinder that work together to move the linkage with fluid force. As long as the wheel is centered, the flow keeps the piston at rest. But as the wheel begins to turn, the control valve directs pressurized fluid from the Power Steering Pump to one side of the piston, which provides assist in that direction. Fluid is returned to the Power Steering Pump for recirculation through a low-pressure return hose.
