How to remove and inspect an oil pump assembly on Subaru Outback?

The first step in taking out an engine is raising the front of the vehicle and using jackstands to secure it. The oil filter must be removed before draining the engine oil. Next remove timing belt, tensioner, crankshaft sprocket, upper timing belt idler pulley, idler pulley number 1 and idler sprocket number 2. On turbocharged models drain coolant, remove radiator and take off cooling pipes from oil cooler at front of engine. Also don't forget to remove the water pump and Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Remove mounting bolts and oil pump while making sure a drain pan is placed beneath for spilt oil. For inspection purposes there are screws that hold down the pump cover; so remove them, apply alignment marks on inner/outer rotors and withdraw them from pump housing. Meanwhile clean up everything including: rotors, pump housing, relief valve and spring because they all might have been damaged at one point or another. If any parts show damage replace the oil pump assembly. Measure rotor tip clearance, outer rotor-to-oil pump housing clearance, rotor-to-cover clearance also if not within limit then replace with a new oil pump assembly but if ok reinstall cover on top of it tightening screws fastener.For installation purposes ensure that relief valve and rotors are lubricated with clean engine oil plus matchmarks which were made earlier are lined up together as well put back new crankshaft oil seal as well as an old O-ring between engine block which has a bearing housing too belonging to this particular type of fitting; but more specifically anaerobic sealant will be applied here so that it can be installed again on top even into its place (engine block). Fix remaining installation steps backwards by refilling fresh lubricants in motor plus brand new filters (oil only) besides refilling liquid cooled systems found those turbo models once more before starting said machine thus checking correct oil pressure as well as looking for any leaks of oil.

The Oil Pump in a Subaru Outback pumps pressurized lubricant through the engine block to keep the engine parts lubricated and cool. The oil in the sump is drawn through a mesh strainer, sent past the filter and cooler, from where oil is sent to bearings, pistons and camshaft and to small hydraulic actuators. Many Outback engines use a crank driven gear style Oil Pump that surrounds or sits beside the crankshaft, and it can come in three arrangements, namely direct drive where the pump encircles the crank nose, gear drive using a spur gear set, and chain drive linking sprockets with a chain.
