- Q: How to Remove the Starter Motor on a Subaru Outback?A: To replace the starter motor, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. On turbo models remove the intercooler. On non-turbo models remove the air filter housing, and remove the air filter housing support bracket. Disconnect the wire and the large cable from the terminals on the starter solenoid, remove the upper starter motor mounting bolt, remove the lower starter motor mounting bolt, and detach the starter from the engine. Installation is the reverse of removal.
