Subaru Outback Throttle Body
The Subaru Outback Throttle Body controls how much air enters the engine according to how far the accelerator pedal is pressed. Positioned in the engine bay of the Outback between the air filter and the intake manifold is a Throttle Body that carries a butterfly plate that pivots to either admit more air or less as the driver pushes the pedal or releases it. Sensors including the throttle position sensor send the plate angle to the powertrain control module, which heightens or lowers injector pulse width in order to keep the air-fuel mixture balanced. A molded bypass passage directs air to an idle air control valve so that idle speed remains steady with the plate nearly closed. In newer model year systems, the electronic throttle control is frequently applied wherein the Throttle Body has an electric motor that responds to pedal signals instead of a mechanical cable to limit the wear of linkages. The Throttle Body unit is typically a reliable component, but excessive deposits can cause stalling or rough idle. The component in a Subaru Outback adopts the butterfly valve design common to the Subaru intake systems. Regular cleaning of the Throttle Body enables stable performance of the Subaru Outback.

- Q:How to Remove and Replace the Throttle Body on Subaru Outback?Posted by Byron P.A:Disconnect the negative battery terminal and remove the air filter housing and inlet tube. Detach the accelerator and cruise control cables from the throttle body, and disconnect the air bypass hose and electrical connectors from the IAC solenoid valve and TP sensor. Mark and remove the coolant hoses, then remove the throttle body and discard the gasket. Clean the gasket surfaces, inspect the bore for deposits, and use a new gasket when reinstalling.
