Subaru Outback Turn Signal Flasher

When you nudge the stalk, the Subaru Outback Turn Signal Flasher will create rhythmic blinks in the indicator lamps for the nearby drivers. In many model years, the Turn Signal Flasher is found in the fuse box and, once activated, regulates current in such a way that the front and rear indicators flash at a steady pace. In older versions, a thermal Turn Signal Flasher was applied, wherein the electric flow caused the heating of a springy metal strip, which bent and completed the circuit, cooling and then repeating it, which created both the click sound and on-off light. Newer generations came with a solid state Turn Signal Flasher that replaces the moving metal with an electronic relay operated by a timing chip, a design that works flawlessly with low-draw LED bulbs and uses the classic blink cadence. No matter what style your Subaru uses, the function of the module remains the same. When you signal for a lane change or turn, this prevents the bulbs from burning out. The main difference between Outback production years is the switch between thermal and solid state. Since the unit is inexpensive and long-lived, a driver usually only realizes a problem has occurred when the lights stop flashing altogether. This is a hint a Turn Signal Flasher is no longer working and the compact part needs replacing in their trusted Subaru Outback.

Subaru Outback Turn Signal Flasher Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
Where is the Turn Signal Flasher Located and What is Its Function on a Subaru Outback?
    Posted by Derek L.
    A:
The turn signals flash when the signal switch is turned on. Once pushed down, the hazard flasher switch will flash all four turn signal lights at once. It is under the instrument panel on the driver's side. An audible click can be heard when it works properly. In case one side or other of the indicators does not work and there is no clicking sound from a flasher unit, then there's an indication of a defective turn signal bulb if flashes occur much more quickly than they normally do. When both turn signals fail to blink, the problem may be caused by a blown Fuse, defective flasher unit, broken switch or a loose or open connection. Check the wiring for a short before installing a new fuse if a quick check of the fuse box reveals that the turn signal fuse has blown out. To remove this unit you must remove knee bolster and reinforcement panel behind it in order to unplug electrical connector from flasher unit, remove mounting bolt and remove unit as necessary. Note: Later models have an 8-pin module located in same area; installation is reverse of removal.
