Inspect and replace the wheel cylinder if needed. Finally, adjust the brake shoes using the adjuster, install the brake drums, wheels, and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, tighten lug nuts, and test the brakes for proper operation before driving.

To replace the parking brake shoes, utilize a hold-down spring tool (or screwdriver if applicable), disconnect hold-down cups and springs, unhook the secondary shoe return spring, remove the strut, strut spring, and lower return spring, detach the parking brake cable from the lever, clean the backing plate, lubricate the brake shoe contact areas with high-temperature grease, transfer the parking brake lever to the new secondary shoe, install the hold-down pin, spring, and cup, and lock down the spring. Proceed to install the strut and strut spring, hook the lower return spring to each shoe, install the adjuster between them, place the primary shoe and shoe guide plate, install the hold-down pin, spring, and retainer, and hook the upper return springs to each shoe. Repeat this procedure for the other parking brake assembly.

Work on only one drum brake assembly at a time. Using a hold-down spring tool, push down and give each hold-down cup a 90-degree twist. Disconnect the hold-down cups and remove the hold-down springs. Disconnect the lower shoe return spring from the brake shoes. Remove the leading and trailing shoes and the adjuster mechanism from the backing plate. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. Place the leading and trailing brake shoe and adjuster assembly on a bench and remove the rest of the parts.

Adjust the parking brake and test the brakes for proper operation.
