    Q:
How to adjust and replace the parking brake cable on Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
Make sure two things before fixing the parking brake: no air blockages in the brake fluids, and fully working rear brakes or correct shoes. Use the parking brake lever three to five times and count - it should move five to six times before being fully anchored. It takes around five to six clicks for the parking brake to work, so if it locks up sooner, the cable has been stretched, while if it clicks longer than that, the cable is too tight. Remove the center console cover and turn the inner adjuster nut by hand: turn it clockwise to tighten or counterclockwise to loosen the cable. Move the parking brake up again to see if the number of clicks matches before you tighten the locknut against the adjuster nut. The cables must be replaced if the tailgate brake adjustment cannot be done correctly. Put on the center console cover after setting the correct wire position. To take off the center console, loosen two nuts, lift your vehicle on jackstands, remove the rear wheels, and drive off. Take out the front fuel tank covers, note how the back cables route, then take off all metal clips and rubber clamps. Take off the cable from the equalizer, roll back the carpet, then remove the two small metal nuts that hold up the cable connectors. Pull the cable out of the brake holder found at the back wheel and unlink it from the brake plate behind it. Turning the car upside down happens opposite to how you started earlier by fixing all cables right, avoiding tangles, and making sure nothing affects how they work. Then you adjust the cables and put back the center console.

    Q:
How to Adjust, remove and install the Parking Brake Cable on Subaru Outback? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before adjusting the parking brake, ensure the brake hydraulic system is air-free and rear brakes are properly adjusted. Apply the parking brake lever three to five times and count the clicks until full engagement. The correct number is seven to eight clicks. If more or less, the cable is either stretched or too tight. Remove the center console cover, adjust the locknut, and turn the adjuster nut to tighten or loosen the cable. Repeat if necessary. After adjustment, tighten the locknut against the adjuster nut. To remove the parking brake, loosen the cable lock nut and adjuster nut, raise the rear of the vehicle, remove the rear wheels, remove the front fuel tank covers (STI models only), remove all clamps and clips attaching the cables, disengage the cable from the equalizer and rear brake assembly, and detach the cable from the brake backing plate. Install in reverse order, ensuring cables are not kinked and nothing interferes with them. Adjust the cables after installation.
