    How do you adjust the shift cable for the 2001 Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer

    1. Make sure the shift lever is in the NEUTRAL position. 2. Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. 3. Remove the engine splash shield, center exhaust pipe and muffler, heat shield. 4. Loosen Adjusting nut A and Adjusting nut B on both sides of the cable end. 5. Turn Adjusting nut B until it contacts the linkage arm. 6. Install a back-up wrench onto Adjusting nut B to keep it from rotating. 7. Tighten Adjusting nut A to the torque. 8. Remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle. 9. Move the shift lever through all gear positions and verify that the indicated positions correspond with the actual gear positions at the shift lever console. 10. Verify that the engine will start only in PARK and NEUTRAL, and that the back-up lights come on when the shift lever is placed in REVERSE.
