To test the starter, apply the parking brake and try to operate the starter in each shift lever position; it should only work in park or neutral. To replace the shift cable, disconnect it from the battery, ensure the shift lever is in neutral, raise the vehicle, remove the engine splash shield, exhaust parts, heat shield, locking clip, shift cable end, and shift cable from the bracket. To adjust the cable, ensure the shift lever is in neutral, raise the vehicle, and remove the engine splash shield. Exhaust parts, heat shield, loosen the adjusting nuts and turn one until it contacts the linkage arm. Tighten the other, lower the vehicle, test all gear positions, and ensure the engine starts only in park and neutral.

Apply the parking brake and operate the starter in each shift position. Disconnect the battery's negative terminal, set the shift lever to Neutral, and raise the vehicle on jackstands. Remove the engine splash shield, exhaust components, and heat shield. Remove the shift cable from the bracket and loosen adjusting nuts A and B. Tighten nut A to the required torque. Lower the vehicle, test all gear positions, and ensure the engine starts only in Park and Neutral. Adjust the cable if needed.
