Firmly apply the parking brake and try to momentarily operate the starter in each shifttever position. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, make sure the shift lever is in the Neutral position, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, remove the engine splash shield, exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe and muffler, heat shield fasteners and heat shield from under the vehicle, locking clip from the shift lever on the transaxle, shift cable end, shift cable from the mounting bracket, heat shield, center exhaust pipe and muffler, heat shield fasteners, working under the vehicle below the console linkage, loosen adjusting nuts A and B on both sides of the cable end, turn adjusting nut B until it contacts the linkage arm, install a back-up wrench onto adjusting nut B to keep it from rotating and tighten adjusting nut A to the torque, remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle, move the shift lever through all gear positions and verify that the indicated positions correspond with the actual gear positions at the shift lever console, also verify that the engine will start only in Park and Neutral, and that the back-up lights come on when the shift lever is placed in Reverse, if necessary, readjust the cable until these conditions are met.
