    Q:
How to remove and install the cylinder heads on Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
The fuel pump pressure should be relieved and the cable disconnected from the negative terminal of the car battery, the cooling system drained and the spark plugs removed. After that, take out the timing belt, camshaft sprockets, and inner timing belt sledges with ref on turbocharged models, the rocker arm assemblies when disconnecting the timing belt. Move to the camshafts and disconnect the exhaust manifold from the cylinder heads, Before that apply some penetrating oil on the screws and let it work. Unbolt the intake manifold and in the process, pull off all the hoses and brackets that are fixed on the cylinder heads Similarly, if applicable, you will lean off the air conditioning compressor bracket from the left cylinder head. Unfasten the Cylinder head bolts in the order opposite to the sequence in which they were tightened, and then removed the cylinder heads with the old gaskets which must be done carefully so as not to harm the gasket seating surfaces. For installation remove the gasket from the cylinder heads and crankcase, clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder heads and crankcase with lacquer thinner or acetone the mating-surface must be free of oil. The cylinder head gasket should then be fitted over the locating dowels on the engine block and the cylinder head(s) fitted and loosely fastened with the bolts and washers which should have a thin layer of fresh engine oil on there threads. Tighten the bolts in the sequence and to the torque as indicated and follow the cylinder head bolt tightening procedure to the letter, or use a torque angle meter, better still paint the bolt head white so that one is able to achieve the right angle. Lastly, it is recommended to do the installation in the reverse order of the removal process.

    Q:
What should be done after removing the cylinder heads for the 2004 Subaru Forester? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the cylinder heads and the old gaskets. Note: The block and cylinder heads are aluminum. Do not pry between the cylinder heads and the crankcase, as damage to the gasket sealing surfaces may result. Instead, use a soft-faced hammer to tap the cylinder heads and break the gasket seat. Cylinder head disassembly and inspection procedures should be performed by a qualified automotive machine shop.
