    Q:
How to Remove and Reinstall the Rear Steering Knuckle on a Subaru Forester? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the rear driveaxle nut. First loosen the rear wheel lug nuts before blocking the front wheels with jackstands to position the vehicle on boost and remove the rear wheel. Remove the rear wheel. The parking brake cable requires loosening adjustment to achieve relaxed cable tension. During drum brake vehicle maintenance you should take out the brake shoe assembly together with the wheel cylinder. A model with rear disc brakes requires their brake disc and parking brake assembly to be eliminated before further work can begin. Turn off the parking brake cable connection to the supporting plate. Take away the rear wheel speed sensor when it exists on the vehicle. Take off the trailing arm from the rear Steering Knuckle assembly. Remove the control arms from their connection with the rear Steering Knuckle. Unfasten the bolts and nuts which link the strut to the Steering Knuckle. Use a driveaxle nut remover to detach the Steering Knuckle from the CV joint installation on its outer side. When the hub stays attached to CV joint splines you can push the stub shaft through the hub with a two-jaw puller. The inner CV joint should be protected against excessive stretching. A qualified facility can replace wheel bearings during this time when the Steering Knuckle is detached from the vehicle. The replacement of boot covers should occur immediately if any elements of the CV joints show signs of damage. Unfasten the brake backing plate fasteners first and proceed to remove the backing plate. The installation process requires the following sequence: first raise the rear Steering Knuckle with a floor jack until it reaches normal ride height then tighten all link, support and trailing arm fasteners to the correct torques followed by tightening brake component fasteners to their respective torques and driving axle hub nut to specified torque and concluding with wheel lug nut tightening to specified torques and on vehicles with drum brakes the bleeding of brake system must be completed before readjusting the parking brake cable.

    Q:
How to install front steering knuckle on Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
The manufacturer recommends using new self-locking mounting nuts when installing the strut assembly to the steering knuckle. Begin by unstaking and loosening the driveaxle nut. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, block the rear wheels, raise the front of the vehicle, and place it securely on jackstands before removing the front wheel. Next, remove the brake caliper, the caliper support bracket, and the brake disc. For models with ABS, remove the front wheel speed sensor and secure it aside. Disconnect the tie-rod end from the steering knuckle and loosen, but do not remove, the strut-to-steering knuckle nuts, ensuring to mark the relationship of the upper bolt to the strut flange to preserve the camber angle during reassembly. Separate the control arm from the steering knuckle, then remove the strut-to-knuckle nuts and bolts. Remove the driveaxle nut and pull the steering knuckle off the outer CV joint; if the hub sticks to the CV joint splines, use a two-jaw puller to push the stub shaft out of the hub. Exercise caution not to overextend the inner CV joint. While the steering knuckle is removed, a qualified repair facility can replace the front wheel bearings if necessary, and any damaged CV joint boots should also be replaced at this time. Inspect and, if necessary, replace the control arm balljoint while the suspension is disassembled. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to align the mark on the upper strut-to-knuckle bolt with the mark on the strut flange, and tighten all fasteners to the specified torque. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque, and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.

    Q:
How to Remove and Reinstall the Rear Steering Knuckle on a Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
Turn the rear driveaxle nut loose. First, loosen all four wheel lug nuts. After that, put blocks in front of the front wheels. Lift up the car from rear axle to jackstands. Remove the rear wheel. Squeeze the arm that controls the parking brake cable until it gives you room to work with. The Legacy's support arm located behind the wheel and below the body is fused together. Using a jack, hold the subframe strong on 2005 and after models before disconnecting the subframe support. Take off the brake shoes and wheel cylinder on models with rear drum brakes. Take off the rear brake disc and parking brake assembly if you're working on a car with disc brakes in the back. Take out all brackets from both the Steering Knuckle's arm and the Steering Knuckle bracket, and the fasteners. Remove the stabilizer bar link from the Steering Knuckle. Remove the rear wheel speed sensor, if equipped. Hang up the backing plate carefully while you take out the hub and wheel bearing assembly. Detach the shock absorber from the Steering Knuckle. Take the jack and put it under the Steering Knuckle in back to support it, then remove the suspension links from the Steering Knuckle. Take off the bracket linking the Steering Knuckle's arm part to the body. Carefully pull the whole Steering Knuckle away, and check the bushing for any damage. Take your vehicle to a certified mechanic to have them replace damaged bushings. Look at the state of your CV boots when the Steering Knuckle is off, then replace them if needed. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the following points: Lift the rear Steering Knuckle with a floor jack to get the correct ride height. Then, tighten all links, supports, and trailing arm fasteners to the recommended torque; tighten brake parts to those torque values; tighten the drive shaft and hub nut to the required torque; tighten wheel nuts to the noted torque; bleed your brakes if you have drum brakes; and readjust the parking brake cable.

Install the wheel and lug nuts, then lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts and have the front end alignment checked and, if necessary, adjusted. The manufacturer recommends using new self-locking mounting nuts when installing the strut assembly to the steering knuckle.
