    Q:
How to Replace the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on a Subaru Outback? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the instrument panel lower cover, the upper and lower steering column covers, and the instrument cluster trim panel. Depress the release tab on the ignition switch electrical connector and pull the two halves apart. Make sure to disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector by tracing the wires from the ignition switch down to the connector. If equipped, remove the plate underneath the steering column assembly. On models with a tilt steering column, move the tilt lever down far enough to clear the ignition switch. If you're just replacing the ignition switch, remove the switch retaining screw and remove the switch. Otherwise, leave it in place to be removed as an assembly with the Ignition Lock Cylinder. If you're replacing the Ignition Lock Cylinder, use a hammer and punch to unscrew the two breakaway bolts. Knock these breakaway bolts in a counterclockwise direction to unscrew them, remove the upper clamp and detach the Ignition Lock Cylinder/ignition switch assembly from the steering column assembly by pulling it straight down. If the bolts can't be unscrewed using this method, you'll have to drill a hole down the center of each bolt and unscrew them with a screw extractor or use a larger drill bit and drill out the entire bolt head. Remove the ignition switch and Ignition Lock Cylinder as an assembly. If you're replacing the Ignition Lock Cylinder, remove the ignition switch from the Ignition Lock Cylinder assembly. Installation is the reverse of removal. When installing the lock cylinder bolts, tighten them until their heads twist off.
