How to replace the Brake Pad Set on a Subaru Forester? Posted by Customer
    A:
Start the brake pad replacement by loosening its wheel lug nuts, lifting either the front end or rear end of the vehicle off ground and then placing it on jackstands. If you are working on rear brakes remove the wheels and release parking brake lever. Drain about two-thirds of fluid from master cylinder reservoir and place the drain pan under brake assembly. Before starting, use only a brake system cleaner to wash down everything in your complete brake assembly, without blowing off any dust with compressed air. To substitute front pads for brakes press pistons into caliper(s) using C-clamp in order to make space for new pads after which take away lower caliper bolt (on lower pin) and swing upward caliper to reach out pads. In case if it is necessary to detach a caliper completely get both bolts out of it but do not let hang a caliper by means of its hose for braking. Removing outer brake pad together with shims as well as inner one with followings shims also taking away lower and upper anti-rattle clips thereof that need to be inspected plus washed for re-use or replacement if they are damaged. Guide pins together with lock pins should be properly lubricated using high-temperature grease, respectively. Apply anti-squeal compound on the backing plates of new pads and assemble them together with their shims. The guide pin can be slid back onto caliper if removed previously so that one may fold it over their fresh shoes and later fix in place by tightening caliper bolts up accordingly . Before installing cause these components must be cleaned and checked such that any corroded ones or those that are broken cannot be replaced besides ensuring they are tightly secured at all times , this is when you install the 2nd set of guide along with lock pins through the holes provided in slide abutment area . After reinstalling wheels put back shoe hold-down springs thereby lowering vehicle while tightening wheel lug nuts at same time . Brake fluid should be filled up to master cylinder reservoir , brake pedal ought to be pumped a few times to set pads against disc and later recheck the fluid level. Finally, before driving in traffic test the brake operation by applying light brake pressure several times that seat pads prior making heavy brake applications.
