Q:
How Do I Remove and Replace Fuel Injectors and Fuel Rail on a Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
A:
For non-turbocharged models, right-side fuel rail and injectors,Remove the air intake duct, the resonator, and the air filter housing. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs for the No.1 and No. 3 cylinders. Unbolt the power steering pump and reservoir assembly from its mounting bracket and set it aside without disconnecting the power steering fluid hoses. Remove the fuel rail protector. For 2000 through 2002 Legacy and Outback models, there are three bolts to detach the protector; other models have four or five bolts, except for Forester models, which don't have a cover. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors by depressing the release tabs. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator. Loosen the hose clamps and disconnect the fuel supply and return hoses from the fuel rail. Remove the fuel rail mounting bolts. Remove the fuel rail and injectors from the intake manifold as a single assembly. If any injector is difficult to dislodge, wiggle it side-to-side while pulling on the fuel rail. Plug the injector holes in the intake manifold with clean shop rags. Place the fuel rail/injector assembly on a clean workbench. Remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail by pulling off the retainer with needle-nose pliers. Remove and discard the old O-rings from each injector. Install new O-rings on each injector, applying a light coat of engine oil to them. Carefully install the injectors into the fuel rail, ensuring the inner edge of the retainer aligns with the groove in the injector body. Reinstall the fuel rail and injectors, making sure not to damage the O-rings. Tighten the fuel rail mounting bolts. The remainder of installation follows the reversal of the removal process. For the left fuel rail and injectors:On 2000 through 2004 models, remove the bolts securing the windshield washer fluid reservoir to the left strut tower, lift it, disconnect electrical connectors and the rear window washer hose, then set aside. Disconnect the spark plug wires for the No.2 and No. 4 cylinders. Disconnect the PCV hose from the pipe on the left valve cover. Remove the fuel rail protector(s). Cut or remove the cable tie securing the injector harness to the fuel rail, then disconnect the electrical connectors. Loosen the hose clamps and disconnect the fuel hoses from the fuel rail. Remove the three fuel rail mounting bolts. Pull out the fuel rail and injectors from the intake manifold. Replace the injector O-rings. The remainder of installation follows the reversal of the removal process. For turbocharged models:Relieve the fuel system pressure. For 2005 and later models, remove the engine cover. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. If removing an injector from the right cylinder head (cylinder No.1 and No. 3), remove the air intake duct. For the right cylinder head, remove the engine coolant reservoir. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel injector. Remove the fuel injector retaining screw and pull out the injector. Remove and discard the old injector O-ring. Install a new O-ring on the injector, applying a light coat of engine oil. Installation follows the reversal of the removal process.
