Subaru 42021AE03A Fuel Pump Assembly

Start by releasing fuel pressure from the system, joining the negative battery cable, taking out the rear seat and rear floor mat, then removing the access plate (under the passenger seat) on Legacy models. For Legacy vehicles, the necessary access plate is just under the right passenger seat and needs to be taken off. Loosen and remove the screws from the access plate. Raise the plate off the floorpan below your car body. Take away the electrical connector for the fuel pump/sending unit. Then remove the special locking attachments for both the fuel supply and return hoses. To remove the fuel pump/Fuel Level Sensor, first free the jet pump hose from its clamp with your hands. Then disconnect the fuel pump hose and release its mounting bolts. Pull the fuel pump and fuel level sender together from the tank, moving them carefully to keep the float arm safe. Take off the old gaskets. Before putting in the pump, clean the tube where water comes in. When you reinstall the pump, slide in a fresh gasket. Just like removal, but in reverse order. Start the engine after installation, and look for any fuel leaks.

To relieve the fuel system pressure, you need to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and tee-in the fuel pressure gauge between the fuel supply hose and the fuel filter inlet pipe or fuel rail inlet pipe.

The installation process is the reverse of removal.
