    Q:
What is the purpose of relays in a Subaru Impreza's electrical system? Posted by Customer
    A:
There are several electrical accessories in the car including relays that relay electrical signal to the component like fuel injection system, horns, starter and fog lamps. Relays use control circuit (low-current circuit) to open and close power circuit (high-current circuit). If there is something wrong with such relay, the part will not work properly. Most of the relays are located in an engine compartment fuse and relay box. Besides, some relays may be found on or near a passenger's compartment fuse box but they are hidden behind knee bolster which can only be removed. Simply remove it if you suspect a faulty relay and test it using procedure below. Or have the dealer service department test it for you. They cannot repair defective relays; therefore; they must be replaced with new ones. The majority of these vehicles' relays are normally open type of relays. The relay coil connects two terminals which are also called as the control circuit for relay while other ones form its power circuit. When the relay is energized, it causes generation of magnetic field by a coil that would close its larger contacts through which power flows to loads located across circuits. In order to test a normally-open type of relay, turn off any source of power at terminal No 1 and then check if there is no continuity between terminal No 2 at this time using an ohmmeter device make sure that there is continuity between terminal No 1 when terminals No 3 & 4 connected with sources of power and ground respectively. Replace this particular one should it fail such examination as described above.
