Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, disconnect the electrical connector from the VSS, unscrew the VSS from the transaxle, on non-turbo models remove the air filter housing or air intake duct/resonator from the throttle body, on turbocharged models remove the intercooler, remove the upper engine mount, disconnect the transaxle harness electrical connector and detach it from the bracket, drain the transaxle fluid then reinstall the drain plug, if non-turbo model remove the entire exhaust system, if turbo model remove the rear and center portion of the exhaust system, remove the heat shield and the driveshaft, support the transaxle with a floor jack, unbolt the crossmember from the floor pan and lower the transaxle, disconnect the fluid lines from the transaxle, remove the retaining bolts and remove the front VSS and the torque converter turbine speed sensor from the transaxle case, remove the transaxle fluid pan, disconnect the electrical connector from the rear VSS, follow the VSS wiring harness into the transaxle and disconnect the electrical connectors, also remove the screw and detach the ground wire, push the harness through the transaxle case, disconnect the electrical connector from the rear VSS, then remove the retaining bolt and remove the sensor from the transaxle extension housing. Installation is the reverse of removal, noting the points that the harness grommet seats properly in the transaxle case, clean the mating surfaces of the fluid pan and transaxle, then apply a bead of RTV sealant to the flange of the pan, install the pan and tighten the bolts, tighten the sensor mounting bolts, and tighten the bolt.
