How Do I Check the Back-Up Light and Neutral Switches on a Subaru Forester? Posted by Customer

Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands, then locate the back-up light switch and the Neutral Safety Switch on the left side of the transaxle. To check either switch, trace the electrical lead back to its connector, unplug the connector and hook up an ohmmeter to the connector terminals. Put the transaxle into reverse and verify that there's continuity (zero or low resistance) for the back-up light switch and put the transaxle in Neutral and verify that there's continuity (zero or low resistance) for the Neutral Safety Switch. If either switch fails to operate as described, replace it by unscrewing the old switch, installing the new switch (make sure the washer is installed) and tightening it to the torque, then verifying that the new switch works properly and plugging in the electrical connector. Finally, remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
