    Q:
How to Remove and Install the Neutral Safety Switch on a Subaru Impreza? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, put the shift lever in Neutral, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, remove the center exhaust pipe section and on later models the front part of the exhaust system, disconnect the electrical connector from the TR sensor, disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever and from the transaxle, remove the TR sensor mounting bolts, shift the manual lever to the Park position and remove the TR sensor, drive out the roll pin from the end of the shift shaft, slide the shift arm off of the shaft, slide the sensor off of the shaft, place the sensor in position and loosely install the TR sensor bolts, insert a 5/32-inch drill bit through the alignment holes in the ends of the manual and sensor levers, and into the alignment hole in the sensor body, and tighten the sensor bolts securely. Installation is the reverse of removal.

    Q:
Where is the Neutral Safety Switch Located and How to Replace It on a Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
The TR sensor is located on the right side of the transaxle. This procedure applies to all TR sensors except those used on 2005 and later turbocharged Legacy and Outback models with the SAT automatic transaxle. On these models, the TR sensor is mounted on the valve body and cannot be serviced at home. If the TR sensor on one of these models must be replaced, have it replaced by the dealer or a transmission shop. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Put the shift lever in Neutral. Raise the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Remove the center exhaust pipe section. On later models, you might also have to remove the front part of the exhaust system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the TR sensor. Disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever and from the transaxle and set it aside. Remove the TR sensor mounting bolts. Shift the manual lever to the PARK position, which is all the way to the left, and remove the TR sensor. To adjust the TR sensor, place the sensor in position. Install the TR sensor bolts loosely, then insert a 5/32-inch drill bit through the alignment holes in the ends of the manual lever and the sensor lever and into the alignment hole in the sensor body. Then tighten the TR sensor mounting bolts securely. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal.
