    Q:
How to remove and install the trailing arm on Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
The following procedure applies to Forester models only, as all Legacy models have a trailing arm integrated with the rear knuckle and hub assembly. The manufacturer recommends using new self-locking mounting nuts when installing the trailing arm. Begin by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, blocking the front wheels, raising the rear of the vehicle, and placing it on jackstands before removing the rear wheel. Next, detach the parking brake cable from the trailing arm by removing the parking brake cable brackets. Then, remove the nut and pivot bolt that attach the forward end of the trailing arm to the trailing arm bracket, followed by the nut and bolt that connect the trailing arm to the rear knuckle. After removing the trailing arm, inspect the bushings; if they are cracked, hardened, or worn, have them pressed out and new ones pressed in at an automotive machine shop. Installation is the reverse of removal, and once the bolts and nuts are installed, raise the rear knuckle with a floor jack to simulate normal ride height before tightening the trailing arm bolts to the specified torque.
