New self-locking mounting nuts are suggested by the manufacturer to be utilized when fitting the sway bar links. Start by lifting the back part of the car using a jack and secure it on jackstands, while chocking the wheels of the front part of the car. On a Legacy model starting with 2005 up to the present year, detach the rear wheels. Eliminate the link to the sway bar kit by loosening the captive nut and ball stud; on models up to and including 2002 Forester only bolts are needed to be removed. While to detach the sway bar kit, it is enough to undo the upper fastener of the link, the lower one enables you to take off the link as a whole. Then, first, loosen the retainer of the base and then, unscrew it from both sides of the sway bar kit and release the bar. Remove the Sway Bar Bushing from the bar and look for signs of wear and cracks on the bushings, replace the bushings, inspect and replace both the link and
Ball Joints on the sway bar kit in the 2002 and earlier Forester model. The installation is carried out in the reverse sequence to its removal and all nuts and bolts tightened to the correct torque.
