The Subaru Impreza Coolant Reservoir stores excess antifreeze when the engine temperature rises. When the engine temperature goes down, the system is then able to channel fluid back to the radiator to maintain a proper amount of coolant in the system and prevent harmful pockets of air. This tank is a sealed plastic tank connected to the radiator by a hose that has molded level marks so that the correct amount may be checked with the engine cold. The Coolant Reservoir is made of two main configurations. In a non-pressurized overflow arrangement, the pressure cap sits on the radiator while the Coolant Reservoir has a simple plastic lid. When pressure exceeds the cap's rating, coolant flows into the tank and is later drawn back by vacuum once the engine cools down. The pressure cap in a pressurized expansion arrangement is mounted directly on the Coolant Reservoir itself. Here, heavier reinforced plastic is required since the tank is a part of the pressurized loop. In this case, the tank is located as the higher point in the system so that adequate room for thermal expansion is available. Further, on the tank, excess air is vented as opposed to liquid.
