Set the parking brake and block the rear wheels, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, remove the splash shield beneath the radiator, drain the cooling system, remove the air intake duct from above the radiator, remove the coolant reservoir, remove the heat-shield from the bottom of the radiator on 2005 and later turbo Legacy models with an automatic transmission, remove the cover attached to the lower portion of the radiator on 2004 and later turbo Forester models, remove the drivebelt covers, disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses from the radiator by loosening the hose clamps, disconnect the fluid cooler lines from the radiator on automatic transaxle models, disconnect the fan electrical connectors, remove the radiator mounting brackets, remove any clips, brackets, harnesses or hoses that may be attached to the radiator or fan shroud, carefully lift out the radiator along with the cooling fans, remove the cooling fans and shroud from the radiator, inspect the radiator for leaks and damage, remove the mounting bolts from the coolant reservoir, detach the hose to the radiator and then remove the reservoir, remove the top engine cover and remove the hoses to the tank and the mounting fastener and then remove the tank. Fill the cooling system with the proper coolant, start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature while checking for leaks, recheck the coolant level and add more if required, check and add transaxle fluid as needed, tighten the radiator bracket bolts to the torque listed in the specifications, guide the radiator into the mounts until it seats completely, fill the cooling system with the proper coolant, pull the reservoir straight up and out of its bracket near the radiator, make sure the reservoir is clean and free of debris which could be drawn into the radiator, check the radiator mounts for deterioration and replace them if necessary, bugs and dirt can be removed from the radiator by spraying it with a garden hose nozzle from the back side, the radiator should be flushed out with a garden hose before reinstallation, installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, and fill the cooling system with the proper coolant.
