How to Remove the Fuel Pump and Fuel Pump Driver Module on a Subaru Impreza?

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and relieve fuel pressure. Remove the rear seat cushion and fuel pump access cover screws. Disconnect the electrical connector and fuel supply line from the fuel pump module. Remove the fuel pump cover and carefully extract the fuel pump module, protecting the fuel level sensor float arm. Remove and inspect the seal ring, replacing if deteriorated. For turbo models, remove the right rear carpet trim or quarter trim panel, disconnect the Fuel Pump Driver Module electrical connector, remove the fastener and Fuel Pump Driver Module. Reverse steps for installation.

The Subaru Impreza Fuel Pump transfers fuel from the tank to the engine's fuel injection assembly or carburetor for the combustion of air and fuel. In Subaru Impreza fuel-injected models, an electric Fuel Pump is usually positioned inside the tank, which is cooler when submerged and part of the sending unit that signals the gauge that indicates the fuel level. The electric Fuel Pump unit builds the higher pressures required by injection, often in the 40-60 psi range. If the Impreza pump motor is supplied with adequate voltage through a dedicated circuit and relay, it will operate. If the pump unit is supplied with inadequate voltage, pressure and volume tests are recommended. A mechanical Fuel Pump mounted on the engine and driven by an eccentric lever located on the camshaft is utilized by carbureted Subaru Imprezas.
