Subaru Impreza Oxygen Sensor

The purpose of the Subaru Impreza Oxygen Sensor is to monitor oxygen levels in the exhaust gas so that the engine computer can adjust the air-fuel ratio and cut emissions. The Oxygen Sensor has a zirconium dioxide element inside, which contains platinum electrodes. This is housed in a ceramic insulation and threaded into a steel shell in the exhaust stream. Exhaust enters the side openings while outside air reaches the top, whereupon the internal heater temperature rises to about 600°F. The difference in the oxygen generates a signal varying from 0.1 to 0.9 volt. The mixture is rich or lean. The voltage that the circuit produces tells the computer to let it adjust the injector pulse width in closed loop to protect the catalytic converter. Modern Subaru vehicles carry at least two sensors, an upstream unit to guide fuel delivery and a downstream unit to verify converter efficiency.
