How to Remove and Install a Knock Sensor on Subaru Impreza?

Remove the engine cover (if equipped), and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. On turbocharged models remove the intercooler. Disconnect the knock sensor electrical connector, note the orientation of the sensor, use a marking pen to mark the location of the sensor's pigtail on the engine block, remove the knock sensor mounting bolt, and remove the sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Install the sensor in its original position and tighten the knock sensor retaining bolt.

Subaru Impreza Knock Sensor monitors engine vibrations, which are then transmitted to the powertrain control module to help prevent spark knock. The Impreza Knock Sensor is a piezoelectric device that is mounted on the engine block. It generates an electrical impulse when it detects the high-frequency pressure peaks from detonation. By certain features of aspect management, the module receives an impulse that causes it to temporarily retard ignition timing in small steps until the combustion event returns to normal. Afterward, timing is gradually advanced again. The slight vagaries in ignition timing may prevent initiation of knock and allow the engine to operate as close to the knock limit as possible without actually damaging the engine. The Knock Sensor generates a constant series of feedback that makes combustion more efficient and power delivery more stable, improves fuel economy, and reduces emissions. Modern control logic can make these timing adjustments cylinder by cylinder. As a result, the operation of the Knock Sensor is a prerequisite for the operation of the ignition strategy contained within the Subaru ignition system of every Subaru Impreza model, and this Knock Sensor is also applied to protect the engine.
