Subaru Impreza Pilot Bearing

The Pilot Bearing maintains the proper alignment of the Subaru Impreza transmission input shaft in the crankshaft to allow for easy gear changes. The Pilot Bearing is installed at the rear of the boxer engine crank or in the center of the flywheel. With the Pilot Bearing in place, the spinning input shaft rotates freely in the gearbox while the splines are free to slide without metal to metal drag. The Pilot Bearing restricts heat and wear by limiting friction. It stops the chatter, vibration, and hard shifting the driver notices when the bearing starts to fail. Throughout the generations of Subaru Impreza manuals, there are primarily two types, a rolling element Pilot Bearing and a plain bronze pilot bushing. The rolling type uses tiny balls or rollers that course over polished races and can work at higher rotational speeds with radial and axial loads. There is the bushing version which uses an oil fed bronze sleeve that the shaft rides on. This is simpler and cheaper but has a lower load capacity. A clean, precisely fitted Pilot Bearing keeps the shaft aligned with clutch discs so the gearbox can slip into gear without grinding. Drivers of Subaru Impreza cars often hear squeals or feel pedal pulses as the bearing pits, which signal that the replacement restores the light shifting feel the platform is known for.

Subaru Impreza Pilot Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to Inspect and Install a Clutch Pilot Bearing on Subaru Impreza?
    Posted by Amy L.
    A:
The clutch pilot bearing is a needle roller-type bearing that is pressed into the rear of the crankshaft and does not require additional lubrication. To inspect the bearing, remove the transaxle and clutch components, then use a flashlight to check for excessive wear, scoring, dryness, roughness, and any other obvious damage. If any of these conditions are noted, replace the bearing with a special puller or slide hammer and internal puller attachment. To install the new bearing, lightly lubricate the outside surface with grease, then drive it into the recess with a bearing driver or socket. After installation, tighten all fasteners to the recommended torque specifications.
