Subaru Legacy Accelerator Cable transmits the driver's foot pressure directly to the throttle plate so the engine gets the right blend of air and fuel for every situation. In earlier Legacy models, when the Accelerator Cable is pulled, the plate opens, an increase in the vacuum is noted through the venturi and extra fuel rushes from the float bowl to meet the faster airflow. The result is quicker response thanks to the accelerator pump. Later edition Subaru's base Accelerator Cable design remained unchanged even after the carburetor was replaced by electronic fuel injection. Relying on a resilient braided steel core, it slid within a low friction sheath to swing the throttle body shaft. The design of the pedal box of the auto version is longer on a looped path while that of the manual-trans car is shorter with a basically straight design. The difference is fundamentally one of overall length and the shape of the firewall grommet only. Both versions share the same inner wire gauge and snap-in pedal eyelet. The Accelerator Cable connects your pedal to the butterfly valve and ultimately the combustion chamber so a cable that is smooth throughout will ensure that your acceleration phase is predictable. - Q:How to Replace and Adjust an Accelerator Cable on Subaru Legacy?Posted by Alex M.A:To replace the accelerator cable, loosen the locknut and disengage the cable from the cable bracket, disconnect the cable from the throttle lever cam, trace the cable back to the firewall and detach any cable clips or guides, working inside the vehicle, up under the dash, disengage the other end of the cable from the accelerator pedal, pry out the grommet in the firewall, then remove the cable through the firewall from the engine compartment side. Installation is the reverse of removal, making sure the cable is routed correctly, and if necessary, applying sealant around the accelerator cable to prevent water from entering the passenger compartment. To adjust the accelerator cable, turn the adjusting nut to produce just enough cable slack so that the throttle plate is fully closed when the accelerator pedal is released, and have an assistant help you verify that the throttle plate opens all the way when you depress the accelerator pedal to the floor and that it returns to the idle position when you release the accelerator.
