How to remove and install an alternator in a Subaru Legacy?

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the drivebelt cover and remove the alternator drivebelt. If the vehicle is equipped with cruise control, and if the cruise control cable is clipped to the small bracket that's located right behind the alternator electrical connector, detach the clip and set the cable aside to give yourself more room to work. Disconnect the battery cable and the electrical connector from the alternator. Remove this nut and disconnect the battery cable from the B+ terminal, then depress the release tab and disconnect the electrical connector from the alternator. Remove the adjustment and pivot bolts and separate the alternator from the engine. To detach the alternator from the engine, remove the adjustment bolt and the pivot bolt, then lilt the alternator out of the engine compartment. Installation is the reverse of removal. After the alternator is installed, adjust the drivebelt tension.

Subaru Legacy Alternator

The Subaru Legacy Alternator generates electricity and keeps the battery charged while the engine is running. The Alternator consists of two cast aluminum parts housing a stationary windings stator and a shaft mounted rotor driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft of the engine. At the front of the shaft, a pulley and small cooling fan with bearings in both housings support rotation. The rotating belt of the Alternator's rotor creates a magnetic field that moves past the conductors of the stator, inducing AC. The built-in diodes in the rear rectifier convert this AC into a DC applied by the battery and onboard circuits. The modification of field current maintains voltage regulation within a safe range. This comes under the work of the internal regulator or the vehicle's control module. All models of the Subaru Legacy share this trait. The voltage control circuit of the Alternator in Subaru Legacy cars is integrated. It supplies current to the rotor field coils through brushes and cools the rectifier with heat sinks.
