The Subaru Legacy Clutch Fork is the lever that converts the force of the pedal into motion at the release bearing so that the gears can be switched without grinding. Within the bell housing of the clutch lies the Clutch Fork, which receives a push from either a hydraulic slave cylinder on many modern Legacy models or a cable on earlier years, and in turn presses the throw-out bearing against the pressure plate to separate the engine and gearbox. The hydraulic linkage applied in these Subaru cars is similar to brake hydraulic. It consists of a master cylinder, line, and slave, so it is self-adjusting for wear. This is contrary to a cable system which requires manual adjustment at the Clutch Fork end. Certain later iterations have a concentric slave cylinder that encompasses the input shaft and acts directly on the bearing inside the bell housing, eliminating the external Clutch Fork and reducing the parts count. A good Clutch Fork may be overlooked if the designs change, but as cracks, bent arms, and worn pivots raise pedal effort, make noise, and can block shifts. Drivers can extend the life of their clutch by avoiding a constant foot on the pedal, as it overheats the bearing and stresses the linkages across every Subaru transmission type in the Legacy lineup.
