Subaru Legacy Turn Signal Flasher

Subaru Legacy Turn Signal Flasher ensures the blinkers and hazard lights flash at a familiar rhythm to ensure nearby drivers are aware of your next move. As soon as you touch the stalk, a compact relay inside the fuse box activates and allows current to flow through the flasher, which is connected to the lamps. Its design determines the blinking pattern. The early Legacy models were equipped with a thermal Turn Signal Flasher, which heats a special spring strip and the metal in the spring flexes to close the circuit. This causes the metal to cool, which causes the metal to no longer have contact and the circuit opens again. This process continues, making the turn signal flash and also creating that familiar clicking sound. As car line designers began to use more electronics and LED lamps, later versions of Subaru applied a solid state Turn Signal Flasher. This is a package of integrated circuits and transistors that times the flashes electronically and can simulate the old click of the mechanical flasher by using no moving parts. Essentially, a solid state device draws far less power than a heat driven unit. Furthermore, it is able to cope with multiple light assemblies. What's more, the solid state style is known to last much longer than a heat powered unit. A working Turn Signal Flasher allows all Subaru drivers to signal properly. If blinks stop or become erratic, the Turn Signal Flasher is the first item Legacy owners should check.

Subaru Legacy Turn Signal Flasher Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to Check and Replace the Turn Signal Flasher on a Subaru Legacy?
    Posted by Patrick D.
    A:
When the turn signal switch is actuated, the flasher unit activates the turn signal lights, while the hazard flasher switch causes all four turn signal lights to flash simultaneously. An audible click is heard when the flasher unit operates correctly; if the turn signals fail on one side and the clicking sound is absent or if the flashing is much more rapid than usual, a faulty turn signal bulb is likely. If both turn signals do not blink, the issue may stem from a blown Fuse, a faulty flasher unit, a broken switch, or a loose or open connection. A quick check of the fuse box can reveal a blown turn signal fuse, and it is advisable to inspect the wiring for a short before replacing the fuse. To remove the flasher, take off the knee bolster and reinforcement panel behind it, unplug the electrical connector from the flasher unit, and then remove the mounting bolt, with installation being the reverse of removal.
