Have the refrigerant discharged and recovered by an air conditioning technician, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the drivebelts, remove the alternator, disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor, plug the open fittings immediately to prevent entry of dirt and moisture, disconnect the air conditioning compressor clutch electrical connector, remove the compressor-to-bracket mounting bolts and remove the compressor. If a new compressor is being installed follow the new compressor's accompanying directions on draining the excess oil from it prior to installation, the clutch may have to be transferred from the old compressor to the new unit, installation is the reverse of removal, use new O-rings (lightly coated with fresh refrigerant oil) at the line fittings, tighten the compressor mounting bolts and line fittings, only use O-rings that are designed specifically for A/C system applications, reconnect the battery, have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by the shop that discharged. Caution: When replacing entire components, additional refrigerant oil should be added equal to the amount that is removed with the component being replaced. Read the label on the container before adding any oil to the system to confirm that it is compatible with the R-134a system.
