Subaru Outback A/C Compressor
The Subaru Outback A/C Compressor is responsible for compressing a low-pressure gas from the cabin cooling loop into hot, high-pressure refrigerant so that passengers remain comfortable on a hot, summer day. The gas is compressed and heated, after which it goes to the condenser. Outside air cools this heated gas. The chilled liquid then goes to the evaporator. Next, it rushes through the vents and cycles back for the next round. The process is quick and continues after the air-conditioning switch is on. While one refrigerant is applied in two model years, each then uses a dedicated A/C Compressor that is tuned to that refrigerant. The earlier editions utilized R12, while many vehicles manufactured in the mid-1990s and later made use of R134a, which is a cleaner choice that cannot share the mineral oil of R12. While both these systems utilize an A/C Compressor to pressurize and circulate the coolant, mixing components will either result in poor cooling or system damage. - Q:How to Replace an A/C Compressor on a Subaru Outback?Posted by Stephen G.A:Have the refrigerant discharged and recovered by an air conditioning technician, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the drivebelts, remove the alternator, disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor, plug the open fittings immediately to prevent entry of dirt and moisture, disconnect the air conditioning compressor clutch electrical connector, remove the compressor-to-bracket mounting bolts and remove the compressor. If a new compressor is being installed follow the new compressor's accompanying directions on draining the excess oil from it prior to installation, the clutch may have to be transferred from the old compressor to the new unit, installation is the reverse of removal, use new O-rings (lightly coated with fresh refrigerant oil) at the line fittings, tighten the compressor mounting bolts and line fittings, only use O-rings that are designed specifically for A/C system applications, reconnect the battery, have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by the shop that discharged. Caution: When replacing entire components, additional refrigerant oil should be added equal to the amount that is removed with the component being replaced.
